Given the scarcity of Cuban film, this Grand Prix Écrans Juniors’ Cannes award winning pre from VH-PROD comes as a genuine and welcome surprise. Telling the tale of two children and the tensions that manifest and threaten their friendship this work from Juan Carlos Cremata Malberti and Iraida Malberti Cabrera is lighthearted and exploratory cinema. I am looking forward to watching this largely out of curiosity and my interest in film and in addition because it promises to be a good story.
Quality: SCENE DVDRip again with good audio and video quality. Spoken language is obviously Spanish but Subtitles are included with the original SCENE release.
Synopsis: In a tale akin to “Romeo and Juliet,” the friendship between two children is threatened by their parents’ differences. Malú is from an upper-class family and her single mother does not want her to play with Jorgito, as she thinks his background coarse and commonplace. Jorgito’s mother a poor socialist proud of her family’s social standing, places similar restrictions on her son. What neither woman recognizes is the immense strength of the bond between Malú and Jorgito. When the children learn that Malú’s mother is planning to leave Cuba, they decide to travel to the other side of the island to find Malú’s father and persuade him against signing the forms that would allow it.
